Bachata Dancing – Use and Misuse

Bachata Dancing - Use and Misuse“And since they are bachata ignorant, they conveniently call it freestyle, being free from any responsibility and authenticity.”

I have a big problem with so-called dancers coining their style freestyle. Now don’t get me wrong, there is such thing as freestyle in dancing. But keep reading because this is about to get ugly.

First of all, the term “freestyle” came from sports such as swimming, gymnastics or wrestling. Freestyle in swimming means that it’s an event in which the contestants may choose any stroke. It’s the same thing in wrestling – a contestant is allowed to use any holds or tactics.

To break down the term Freestyle… Free – Not obligated to anything; exempt from; not in bondage.

Sidenote: If you may have noticed, you might have used “free” in a sentence from something or someone.
